Sir John Daniel

19 July 2017

Chair of the Board - Chair of the Council - Chair of the Personnel and Remuneration Committee

Sir John Daniel is an eminent educationalist who was President of the Commonwealth of Learning from 2004 to 2012 after serving as UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Education. Knighted by The Queen in 1994, named Officer of the Order of Canada in 2013, and holder of 32 honorary doctorates from universities in 17 countries, Sir John’s career included 17 years as a university president at Laurentian University in Canada and The Open University in the UK. He served on the Council of the International Baccalaureate for most of the 1990s and has a daughter and a son-in-law who are alumni of UWC-USA. This was part of his motivation for applying for the pro bono post of Chair of the UWC International Board when it was advertised in 2012. He finds the mission and values of UWC entirely consistent with his lifelong work of opening up higher education to a greater diversity of people.

“I am pleased that five new institutions have joined the movement since 2012, making the UWC network much less Eurocentric. I believe that UWC provides an excellent education I think it is important that we give more people access to it. We aim to be an international global movement and are working towards that with each new institution and its community and students.”
