Gentoo announces UWC International as charity partner

2 May 2024

UWC International is pleased to announce it will be an official charity partner of the Gentoo Sailing Team, skippered by James Harayda, an alumnus of UWC South East Asia in Singapore.

James is poised to compete in the prestigious Vendée Globe race: a solo, non-stop, round-the-world sailing competition commencing in November 2024. UWC branding will feature prominently on the Gentoo boat throughout the 2024/2025 race. The Gentoo partnership will support the UWC Endowment Fund, which was officially launched on 15 January 2024. The Fund represents a major step towards securing the financial future of UWC, and the provision of scholarships in perpetuity. It will generate income to fund deserving students by attracting gifts from new donors and represents a significant milestone in UWC’s aim to educate and empower future leaders capable of tackling humanity's most significant challenges.

"UWC is really close to my heart; it’s actually where I learned to sail in the first place. I’m very proud to have UWC as a charity partner for the race, and I’m hoping it will help raise awareness and support for the UWC Endowment Fund so that many more young people can benefit from a UWC education in the future."

- James Harayda (UWCSEA, 2006-2016)

"The launch of the UWC Endowment Fund is a significant milestone both in our efforts to provide long-term scholarships for students to study at UWC schools and colleges. As charity partner of  Gentoo Sailing, which includes one of the UWC family in its team, this provides us with a wonderful opportunity to promote the Endowment Fund, and attract donors to ensure the Fund generates maximum impact"

- Faith Abiodun, Executive Director of UWC International
