Pearson College UWC

IB Economics and Theory of Knowledge Teacher

2022-23 School Year

FULL Time

Reporting to - Deputy Head & Vice President of Learning

Pearson College UWC is seeking a teacher with a strong academic and practical teaching background in economics to deliver the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) Economics SL/HL and Theory of Knowledge. The ability to teach Personal and Professional Skills (PPS) within the IB CP program would be a significant asset. This is a full-time appointment to start in August 2022 for a two-year term.

Economics at Pearson College UWC tries to address the question: “How do we achieve wellbeing with limited resources and challenged ecosystems in a constantly changing world?” The IB course is framed within the mainstream approach focusing on a globalized market-based system with government interventions. Using economic models, some quantitative methods and analytical tools, students will analyze economic phenomena and critically evaluate economic policies. Students are asked to approach economic issues by applying theory from diverse viewpoints. Classes are based on empirical evidence and facts of world current and past events.

The TOK course aims to make students aware of the interpretative nature of knowledge, including personal ideological biases – whether these biases are retained, revised or rejected. Students are given the opportunity to reflect critically on diverse ways of knowing and on areas of knowledge. Students are asked to consider the role and nature of knowledge in their own culture, in the cultures of others and in the wider world. TOK also provides coherence for the student, by linking academic subject areas as well as transcending them.

The personal and professional skills course (PPS) is a core component of the Career-related Programme (CP), which is part of our flag-ship Climate Action Leadership Diploma. At Pearson College, this is designed and developed around five themes: personal development, intercultural understanding, effective communication, thinking processes and applied ethics, with specific focus on Climate Action Leadership.

Specific qualifications for the positions are:

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in the subject being taught, preferably a master’s degree.
  • Teaching experience at the upper secondary school level or university level in the subject(s).
  • Experience teaching within the IB curriculum, or a comparative externally examined advanced level course of study for high school students.
  • Qualifications and experience to serve as a leader in one of the College’s creative, action or service activities, which are integral to Pearson College’s educational model and approach to experiential education. Outdoor and/or waterfront education experience is an asset.
  • A commitment and ability to act as an advisor to students and participate actively in our core wellness curriculum
  • International experience or appropriate experience to prepare for working with a diverse population of students from 85 different countries and backgrounds, some coming from very difficult realities.
  • Applicants must be eligible to work in Canada.
  • A class four driver’s license or the ability to obtain one.
  • Share the UWC values and understand its mission

All applicants should have as much passion for teaching the subject to highly motivated 16–19-year-old students from around the world as they have passion for the subject itself. Faculty and students at Pearson College UWC see education extending far beyond the classroom and, as such, all Faculty are expected to lead by example and partner with students in their engagement with the community, locally, nationally, and internationally. This commitment includes leading creative, action or service (CAS) activities as well as engagement in residential life. Candidates must be open to participating in and contributing to the community life of the College. Faculty members also act as advisors to small student groups, which is integral to our student support within and outside of the classroom.

Candidates should note in their application expertise and qualifications in teaching other courses offered through the IB Diploma Programme.

Remuneration for this full-time position is based on qualifications and experience according to the College's salary scale.
