Specialisms: The college was founded as a memorial to former Canadian prime minister and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Lester B. Pearson. The goal was to create a global school bringing together young people who have great leadership potential from every corner of the world. Forty years on, the college continues to produce alumni who have a genuine concern for others a make a difference in the world.

Young people interested in marine life can use the marine sciences centre, which features a well-equipped oceanfront lab. They can conduct research above and below water at nearby Race Rocks Ecological Reserve, which the college has managed for the Canadian government since 1997.

Beyond the classroom: Pearson College UWC offers 32 activities based around creativity, action and service. The college is renowned for offering students the opportunity to learn through new experiences, especially around sustainability.

For example, students can try sailing, diving or social entrepreneurship. Or they can work with and visit disabled, older and disadvantaged people in the local community. All students take a basic first aid course and expedition training.

During the autumn and spring terms, students develop their own activities for Project Weeks. Projects have included volunteering in soup kitchens, teaching in museums, extended kayak trips and fundraising.

On campus, students take on a regular job, such as being a campus firefighter or working in college greenhouses.
Every year, students perform a show, called ‘One World’, at a theatre in Victoria. It features international music, stories and dance.

Until you’re thrown into an environment like this, you don’t know your potential for growth. You can really surprise yourself. Thanks to my friends here at Pearson, when I hear about events around the world, like the earthquake in Nepal, or the cyclone in Vanuatu, I think about the people I am close to and what they are going through. Now, everything’s personal.
