Youth Leadership Summit (UWC-YLS)

National Committee of the Netherlands

The Dutch National Committee YLS is a two week programme for young people aged 15-20 with a focus on integration issues, peace-building and leadership skills development.  It is normally held annually in July/August but there was no Youth Leadership Summit held in the Netherlands in 2011

The programme brings youth from diverse backgrounds together to tackle the issue of integration in the Dutch context. Participants are guided through very difficult topics and conversations, and taught the necessary skills to work through conflict and still value individual differences. It is a living community in which young people practice what it means to be a leader on a daily basis.

The goals of the UWC-YLS are:
  • to nurture the development of young leaders who value social cohesion, peace and justice
  • to assist youth develop skills in order to promote healthy, democratic and well integrated communities.
  • to provide a positive response to the increasing tensions between the Dutch native population and different ethnic minorities
“My understanding of integration has broadened. I understand that it is more than people of different cultural backgrounds coming together. It also has to do with the effects of stereotypes and exclusion and the role of privilege.”

Who can apply
Young people aged from 15-20 living in the Netherlands/Flemish Belgium or the Dutch Antilles.
