Young Heroes
Waterford Kamhlaba UWC
Young Heroes is a charity that sponsors children across Swaziland who have lost their parents to the HIV and AIDS epidemic. In 2006 student Amy Burnett (Waterford Kamhlaba UWC) started the Young Heroes Challenge while she was studying. Since then, Waterford students have established a link with a local school Mbalenhle Primary School, where they have built a new classroom block and kitchen, drilled bore holes and put up fences. They are currently working on teachers housing and building a library for the school. Waterford raise enough funds to sponsor nine children at the school, orphans of HIV/AIDS to provide food, clothing, and school fees every year and challenge the other UWCs to match this. They have also worked with the primary school students to produce the book Litsemba – a collection of creative writing by students from Mbalenhle Primary school and from Waterford to publicise the orphan crisis and raise funds.
The project is led by students at Waterford but there is also an active alumni network based internationally. Read more about the work of the
