This sense of community has stayed with me

Julie Perry, (LPC 94-96) is currently a School Social Worker at the Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy in Bermuda.

Julie graduated from LPCUWC in 1996, and went on to study at Brock University in Canada, where she graduated in June 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.  After graduating, she worked at a group home for adults with developmental disabilities and behavioural issues in Ontario, Canada for six months before starting a two-year Masters degree in Social Work at the University of Toronto, which she completed in 2003.  She moved to England for about eight months, and for six of those, she was working in Liverpool as a social worker with young people aged 16-21 who were either in or transitioning from the foster care system.  She has now moved back to Bermuda is enjoying working in a school for children with disabilities.  Julie is also a member of the Bermuda National Association of Social Workers.

“UWC had a huge impact on my life in terms of influencing some of my core beliefs, giving me a career direction and beginning some amazing friendships. I think before coming to UWC my life was very insular, especially being from a small island. UWC really opened my eyes to the rest of the world.” states Julie.

“In terms of academics, the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme really encourages students to develop analytical skills and creativity. I think in my education prior to that there was more emphasis on rote learning, memorising information etc. It was difficult initially for me to make that switch to really think for myself! At my secondary school at home, there was a big emphasis on individual achievement, whereas I felt a much bigger focus on community at UWC, both our school community and the wider community we were a part of, and how we can play a role and contribute.

“This sense of community has stayed with me. I am an active member of the Board of Directors for a local children’s foster home, The Sunshine League and also one of the leaders of my church’s youth club for children ages 5-12.

“I’ve won various awards and scholarships in my schooling career, but I think at this point in my life I look at my “achievements” in terms of life experiences. I think I’ve had a lot of rich experiences, both personal and professional, and I count my experience at LPCUWC as one of them.”
