Li Po Chun UWC of Hong Kong

Founded:
1992  Student Profile: 250 students aged 16–19
Location: Sha Tin, New Territories, Hong Kong SAR

The campus of Li Po Chun UWC occupies a spectacular ocean front site in Hong Kong’s New Territories with the steep wooded slopes of Ma On Shan mountain as a backdrop, but in one of the most dynamic and cosmopolitan cities in the world.

"UWC taught me to think, to learn, and to explore the infinite possibilities for creative responses to the unknown world. It has provided me with the initiative to meet, interact, and relate freely to peers, to teachers, and to strangers who could become friends. UWC created an environment which can only be compared to that of a tightly knit family. The closeness of my new extended family encouraged me to let go of my inhibitions and embrace the world."
Ying Hai Xie, China (LPC 92-94)

Students have access to fine libraries, museums and concert halls, as well as opportunities to link up with local and international organisations and schools in their areas of interest. Many also make supportive social contacts off campus.

Community service includes work with such diverse organisations as WWF, Teen Aids, Amnesty International, the YWCA and local agencies catering to the disabled and underprivileged. The whole ‘Quan Cai’ programme of activities is enriched by the College being able to enter local festivals and competitions and to interact with local and international schools in sports, debating and cultural and artistic activities. There is also ample opportunity for students to take the initiative in starting new ventures, either independently or by linking up with groups such as UNICEF, Oxfam and Greenpeace.

Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of the Peoples' Republic of China and special aspects of the Li Po Chun UWC programme enable students to learn more about Mainland China and to visit nearby provinces. Chinese language is offered at five levels and the unique programme of Chinese Studies explores the art, philosophy and history of Mainland China as well as contemporary issues. Martial arts, Chinese dancing, drama, calligraphy and cooking are also available. All first year students travel into Mainland China, and other projects enable students to spend time with Chinese communities in Guangdong and Beijing.

Many Graduates choose to include a Chinese dimension to their university degrees and subsequently return to Mainland China, Hong Kong or Taiwan to work or study. Hong Kong's location also offers exciting opportunities for low budget travel to other Asian countries. As a result, the College has relationships with SOS Children’s Villages in Sri Lanka and Vietnam, the Christina Noble Foundation in Thailand, Apo Reef in the Philippines and the minority Yao Tribe in Northern Guangdong.

All staff, who come from many different countries, live with their families in the same residences as the students. This makes for a close community and provides the basis for the College’s student support system, which includes regular academic and personal counselling as well as a life skills programme.

A lively programme of student-run activities includes outdoor cafés, concerts, drama and residence activities.

The United World College in Hong Kong was established through a generous grant from the Li Po Chun Charitable Trust Fund and support from the Hong Kong Government. The project was initiated by Dr Lee Quo-Wei and Mr Li Shiu Tsang. With endowment funds donated by the Li Po Chun Charitable Trust Fund and the Hong Kong Jockey Club, as well as financial support from the Lord Wilson United World Scholarship Fund and from the Government of the Hong Kong SAR through the Direct Subsidy Scheme, the College provides substantial financial support with all but a few students supported by full or partial scholarships.
